THE AREA
The Kauaeranga River winds down from the Coromandel Ranges through the Kauaeranga Valley, entering the Hauraki Gulf beside Thames. Along the valley there are many farmlets, lifestyle homes, and native bush.
About 15 kilometres up the Kauaeranga Valley Road, the Department of Conservation Headquarters for the Kauaeranga Valley marks the start of DOC land. There are many camping grounds, tramps and several great swimming holes along the way.
Thames itself and the Coromandel Peninsula have many attractions to cater for the interests of any group. Whether you are looking for adventure, rest, scenic views, history, education or more - you'll find it near Thames.
If you cannot find something you particularly want, please contact us or any of the local agencies and we'll do our best to suggest a plan for you.
THE KAUAERANGA VALLEY
Swimming Holes
KVCC has two very good swimming holes right here at camp, with canoes available. Further up the valley, Hoffmans Pool is very popular, as well as the one just down from Booms Flats camping ground. Ask us, as there are several more good un-named swimming holes that you may like.
Tramps and Hikes
Tramps ranging from 30 minutes to overnight are available. The Pinnacles is a very popular six hour round trip, with the spacious Pinnacles Hut a home away from home in the heart of the Coromandel bush.
